A man from China, who has been living without a right ear for the last few years, will soon get a new one. After doctors grow this part of the body on the patient's arm, using the cartilaginous part of his rib.

On Tuesday, according to the China Daily newspaper (Patient grows ear for transplant on his arm), a group of doctors led by military reconstructive surgeon Dr. Guo Shuzhong completed the second of three stages of work.

During the first stage, doctors inserted an expander under the skin of the patient Ji (Ji), the man's full name is not reported. Then this area was filled with water to "stretch" the skin.

This week, specialists from the First Clinical Hospital of Xi'an Jiao Tong University (Xi'an Jiaotong University) took a part of Ji's rib cartilage, formed the basis for the future ear from it and implanted it under the pre-prepared skin. Now doctors are waiting for the ear to form and grow to the size when it can be transplanted onto Ji's head.

"The third stage, the transplantation of a new ear on Ji's head, will take place in 3 or 4 months," Dr. Guo's colleague, Shu Maoguo, told the China Daily correspondent.

Ji told the publication that the new ear growing on his arm "looks exactly like the old one."
