Editing of embryonic genomes – only under license

British scientists have received permission for the genetic modification of human embryos

Maxim Ryzhkov, TASS

The British scientific community has received permission to modify human embryos. This was announced today by the British Service for Human Fertilization and Embryology. According to the British media, such a license was issued in the UK for the first time.

"Our licensing committee has approved the request of Dr. Cathy Niakan from the Francis Crick Institute to renew the license for laboratory research, which includes editing the genome of (human) embryos," the statement said.

The condition of the regulatory service when issuing this license is compliance with ethical standards of research and the inadmissibility of implantation of genetically modified embryos to women.
