A device has been created for instant detection of drugs in saliva

American scientists have created a device capable of instantly detecting banned substances in human saliva. The results of the study are reported by the journal Analytical Chemistry (Small Molecule Detection in Saliva Facilitates Portable Tests of Marijuana Abuse).

The created mobile platform is based on sensors (magnetic biosensors) sensitive to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a substance contained in the inflorescences and leaves of cannabis. It took the experts three minutes to collect saliva samples with a cotton swab, analyze them and display the results on the screen of a smartphone or laptop. According to scientists, the device not only detects THC, but also determines its concentration.

The authors of the study describe the principle of operation of the tester. A sample of saliva mixed with antibodies – molecules that are able to selectively connect to a certain substance (in this case, THC) – is placed on a disposable chip covered with sensors that are already linked to tetrahydrocannabinol molecules. The more THC was in saliva, the fewer free antibodies are available for binding to THC located on biosensors. Sensors register this amount, and the reader determines the content of the substance in the original sample.

According to scientists (Stanford engineers develop the 'potalyzer,' a roadside saliva test for marijuana intoxication – VM), the platform can be used to detect not only marijuana, but also morphine, heroin, cocaine and other drugs.
