For the first time in the world: successful penis transplantation

The first man with a donor penis is going to become a father

The surgeon who performed the world's first penis transplant operation to a man told the BBC that his patient was going to become a father, the Russian Dialogue reported the other day (a press release from Stellenbosch University doctors perform the first successful penile transplant in the world was published a month earlier - VM). His girlfriend said she got pregnant about four months ago.

His girlfriend said that she got pregnant about four months ago, and this proves the fact that "the transplant was successful," Andre van der Merwe said.

The 21-year-old recipient, whose name is not disclosed for security reasons, damaged his penis as a result of an unsuccessful circumcision.

The operation took place in December. Surgeons at Stellenbosch University and Tigerberg Hospital performed a nine-hour operation to transplant a donor penis.

Dr. Van der Merwe said he was "very happy" when he heard that the young man's girlfriend was pregnant and did not ask for a paternity test, because there was no reason not to believe the couple.

"This is exactly what we expected: he should be able to urinate standing up and perform sexual acts. So this is a very important stage for him," Dr. Van der Merwe told the BBC. He did not assume that the man would remain infertile, since the problem concerned the penis, not the testicles.

In addition, Dr. Van der Merwe said that surgeons are still studying the success of the operation, after which they may carry out further transplants.

As a result of unsuccessful circumcision, the boy had only 1 cm of penis left. At that time he was 18 years old and had a sexual life.

When transplanting a donor penis in order to connect tiny blood vessels and nerves, surgeons used some methods originally developed for facial transplants.

Attempts at penis transplantation have been carried out before, one of the cases was described in China.

At first, that operation seemed to be successful, but later the body rejected the transplant

Doctors say that one of the countries most in need of penis transplant operations is South Africa.

Every year, during traditional initiation ceremonies, dozens (and according to some reports, hundreds) of boys are injured or die.
