Half a billion for the liver

The Ministry of Defense wants to allocate 518 million rubles for the creation of an artificial liver

RIA NewsThe Ministry of Defense of Russia has announced a competition for the implementation of experimental design work on the creation of a bioengineered liver (code "Prometheus"), the maximum price of this state contract is 518.5 million rubles.

The order for the needs of the department on the public procurement portal was published by the Federal Agency for the Supply of Weapons, Military, Special Equipment and Materiel (Rosoboronpostavka).

According to the project documentation, the purpose of the work is to create a bioengineered liver using the patient's own stem cells for use at the hospital stage of medical evacuation. The liver is intended for transplantation to a patient with irreversible pathology.

As noted in the materials for the tender, the prototype should have all the properties and functionality of a natural biological liver, including neutralizing xenobiotics, removing excess hormones, vitamins, toxins from the body, regulating carbohydrate metabolism, as well as replenishing and storing rapidly mobilized energy reserves.

The composition of the product should include the liver skeleton, the patient's stem cells and growth factors – molecules necessary for the growth of cells and tissues. At the same time, the methods for obtaining the liver skeleton should be clarified at the stage of the preliminary design.

"Stem cells are extracted by taking a puncture from a patient from various sources, including bone marrow stroma and adipose tissue," the document says.

The work must be completed by November 25, 2016. Applications for participation in the tender are accepted until March 15, summing up the results of the competition is scheduled for March 20, 2013.
