Hydrogel biochip for cancer diagnosis

Magic Biochip
STRF.ruBreast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women.

Every ninth woman in the world gets breast cancer during her lifetime. About 10% of all cases of this disease are caused by inherited mutations. To date, two genes have been identified and characterized, mutations of which lead to the emergence of familial forms of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. It should be particularly noted that carriers of mutations have a risk of developing cancer at a young age that exceeds that of the rest by almost ten times. In addition to the influence of the factor of heredity, there has recently been a general increase in the incidence and mortality from breast cancer and ovarian cancer. In view of all the above, the development of methods for the early diagnosis of these malignant changes becomes extremely relevant.

Scientists of the V. A. Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (project manager – Candidate of Chemical Sciences Alla Yuryevna Rubina) offer their original approach to solving this problem.

The methodology developed by the authors is based on the determination of several molecular markers of breast cancer and ovarian cancer using so-called hydrogel biochips, a modern method developed by scientists and allowing to assess the level of production of the studied proteins in the cell. The biological microchip contains an array of gel cells, inside which specific antibodies to the cancer markers of interest are "fixed", one type of antibodies per separate marker in each cell. This technology allows not only simultaneous diagnostics of several proteins, but also analysis in many parameters.
