A centenary patient underwent heart surgery in Italy
Copper news

Italian doctors performed heart surgery on a centenarian patient. According to La Nazione (Firenze, intervento su centenario Primato mondiale a Careggi), the intervention was carried out by the staff of the Careggi Hospital in Florence, the capital of the Italian province of Tuscany.

The patient of the Florentine doctors was a man born in 1911, who worked as a urologist until the age of eighty. The operation was required by an elderly Italian after he suffered a heart attack.

The operating team of the Careggi Hospital was led by Niccolo Marchionni, who is also president of the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics (Società Italia di Geriatria e Gerontologia).

During the intervention, surgeons increased the lumen of the heart vessels with a balloon expander.

In addition, three stents were installed in the coronary arteries of an elderly patient, which prevent their repeated narrowing.

According to Marchionni, he could not find official publications describing the conduct of similar operations for such elderly people, both in Italy and in other countries.
