The Government of Belarus has approved the draft interstate target program of the Eurasian Economic Community "Innovative Biotechnologies". The corresponding decision is contained in the resolution of the Council of Ministers of Belarus No. 707, the Staff of the Council of Ministers told BelTA.

Director of the Institute of Microbiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Emilia Kolomiets told BelTA that scientists from Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan will take part in the implementation of the new program. The Belarusian side will involve the Institute of Microbiology and the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as the Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Ministry of Health.

It is planned that during the implementation of the new program, the participating countries will form a single resource database of biotechnologies, which will include information about various collections of microorganisms, plant and animal cells, and genetically engineered structures. "The creation of such a database will allow us to provide free access to the genetic resources of our colleagues, which will open up new opportunities for the development of innovative biotechnologies in our countries," Emilia Kolomiets said.

The participants of the program will carry out a set of projects on the development of modern biological products for agriculture, food industry, healthcare, environmental protection. There will be new biological fertilizers, plant protection products from diseases and pests, the use of which will help to increase the competitiveness of agricultural production.

Joint research in the field of DNA technologies, genetic certification and identification, and the production of transgenic plants will be organized separately. Modern diagnostic drugs for medicine and agriculture will be created.

Specialists will also develop a set of regulatory documents on the harmonization of rules for the use of resources in the field of biotechnology, rules for the exchange of strains, cultures and techniques.

In general, as a result of the implementation of the new program, it plans to develop 42 modern technologies suitable for commercialization, create 16 national collections of microorganisms and cell cultures, 5 information retrieval databases, a common Internet resource of the participating countries of the program.

It is planned that the draft of the new program will be approved by the Interstate Council of the Eurasian Economic Community this year.
