Vermont Governor legalizes euthanasia

Copper news

The American state of Vermont has become the third in a row where euthanasia is now officially allowed, USA TODAY reports (Vermont governor signs end-of-life bill). The relevant law, which was recently approved by the Senate and the state House of Representatives, was signed by Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin.

The conclusion should indicate that the patient has no more than six months to live. In addition, the euthanasia procedure itself can be carried out no earlier than 17 days after receiving the drug, so that the patient has the opportunity to change his mind.

Vermont became the first US state in which euthanasia (voluntary death with medical help) was recognized as legal through the adoption of an appropriate law. In the other two, Oregon and Washington, euthanasia was allowed through referendums. In Montana, this procedure is officially outlawed, but, according to the decision of the Supreme Court, a doctor can avoid responsibility for participating in it. Currently, euthanasia is also officially allowed in three European countries — the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland.

According to recent polls, 84% of Americans believe that terminally ill people should have the right to control their lives.
