Mascara and lipstick save from death

In the UK alone, more than 700,000 people over 65 seek medical help every year after a fall. For people over 75 years of age, the consequences of fractures are the main cause of death. Especially dangerous is the most common hip fracture among elderly women: the probability of dying within a year after it is 20%.

Scientists at the French University of Saint-Etienne, led by Patricia Pineau, an employee of the sponsor of the study, the firm L'Oreal, offer elderly ladies an original way to prevent fractures: in addition to fighting osteoporosis, to monitor your appearance – use lipstick and mascara.

The explanation is simple: exercises for precise coordination, necessary to apply a war paint on the face, improve coordination of movements in general.

100 women aged 65-85 years took part in the experiment. To measure the fluctuations of the center of gravity and changes in posture, participants had to wear shoes with sensors built into the insoles and special belts. Their design is not specified, but the inconveniences from measuring devices were certainly compensated by the ability to use cosmetics of a well-known company.

As expected, the researchers found that those elderly ladies who painted their eyes and lips every day had better posture, kept their balance better and fell less often than those who did not take care of their appearance.

The results of the work will be presented at the 19th World Congress on Gerontology, which will be held in Paris on July 5-9, 2009.
