Measure your waist and blood pressure!

On May 6, a round table with the participation of doctors and representatives of the press was held at the Central House of Journalists in Moscow, announcing the annual All-Russian action "Days of Arterial Hypertension".

In the capital, an action called "Are you at risk? Measure your waist and blood pressure" on May 23 will be held in business centers, and on the weekend of May 24 - in large supermarkets, pharmacies and other public places.

Director of the Russian Medical Society for Hypertension Sergey Nakonechnikov recalled that usually with high blood pressure a person suffers from diseases such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, kidney failure.

The campaign is designed to draw the attention of the general public to the problem of the growth of cardiovascular diseases in our country.

Unfortunately, with limited material and human resources, it will be impossible to conduct a deep scientific study of this problem. It is impossible to measure the pressure of every Russian. The organizers plan to examine about 15-20 thousand people at each point of the action.

The President of the Russian Medical Society for Hypertension, Professor Irina Chazova, noted at a press conference that "our country is so poor that the last large-scale cardiological studies were conducted in Russia during perestroika and were sponsored by American institutes. Our state does not allocate money for such expensive but accurate research." Therefore, the campaign "Are you at risk? Measure your waist and blood pressure" will be an attempt to conduct a modest study on hypertension with a meager budget. At the same time, doctors will participate in it for free in their free time.

At the press conference, it was announced that a competition for the best journalistic material dedicated to the fight against hypertension and overweight was held. Details of the contest on www.and-rus.ru and www.ruj.ru .
