According to the published data of the Commission of the European Union, this year 15 million people have already suffered in hospitals alone due to a medical error. The EU Commissioner for Health Androula Vassiliou is going to present plans to expand the rights of patients.
Medical errors occurred in about 10% of cases when seeking medical help in clinics in EU countries, EU Commissioner for Health Androulla Vassiliou said in an interview with the daily Berlin newspaper Die Welt. "Medical errors are a real challenge for the European healthcare system."
Ms. Vassiliou demands from the Member States of the Union to improve medical care and the rights of patients.
"We expect the participating states to take into account a number of recommendations to improve patient safety," Vassiliou said. "These include, in particular, simplifying the filing of complaints by patients in case of medical errors and compensation for damages." Already on Wednesday, the commissioner promises to present concrete plans.
