Mouse from a leukocyte

Scientists first used white blood cells to clone an animal

Ekaterina Plyasunkova, RIA NovostiA group of scientists from the Japanese RIKEN research center managed to clone a mouse using just one drop of rodent blood, the official website of the center reported on Wednesday.

Leukocytes isolated from a drop of peripheral mouse blood were used for cloning. At the same time, scientists have managed to develop a way to isolate these white blood cells in large quantities.

According to the head of the group Atsuo Ogura, scientists have never used leukocytes for cloning before. He also suggested that this method can be applied to other animals.

The results of the study are published in the American scientific journal Biology of Reproduction. Scientists hope that their research will help increase the population of endangered animal species on Earth.
