National Biobank in St. Petersburg?

Biobank of St. Petersburg State University may receive the status of a national

BaltInfo

Since the beginning of March, the newly created biobank of St. Petersburg State University has been collecting DNA materials from people suffering from various diseases (from cardiac to neurodegenerative) for further research in the field of biomedicine.

As the press service of the university informed BaltInfo, this biobank is a unique and the first regional bank in Russia, where scientists will collect and store biological materials used in the future in translational medicine not only for large-scale research, but also for the development of new medicines. Based on the data obtained, researchers will be able to predict the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in patients of different ages, monitor the physical condition of students.

The "decoding" of the features of patients' genomes will allow scientists to find new ways in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases (for example, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc.), for which a grant of 750 million rubles has been allocated. The 40th hospital will be the base for the study. Scientific developments will prevent the occurrence of the above-described diseases, increase the life expectancy of the population, identify genetic, behavioral and environmental risk factors, and develop a new personalized approach to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human diseases.

It is planned to stage-by–stage biobanking, structuring of information about biological samples and an integrated approach in conducting the study, which will involve not only scientists of St. Petersburg State University, but also partner organizations - the 40th Hospital, biobank and the Federal State Budgetary Institution "NIIAG named after D.O. Ott" SPO RAMS.

Now the biobank is located within the walls of the university and is designed for 200 thousand samples. It is important to note that it is a resource center and is part of the structure of the St. Petersburg State University Science Park and may soon receive the status of a national biobank.
