RUSNANO will help with the delivery of reagents

The Supervisory Board of RUSNANO approved an infrastructure project to create a reagent catalog warehouse in Russia

The current lack of infrastructure that provides a full range of services to provide high-purity chemical and biochemical reagents to Russian manufacturers and research organizations is a significant deterrent to the emergence of innovative developments and companies in the field of biomedicine.

The project to create a warehouse of high-purity reagents in the Russian Federation will be implemented in 3 stages. The total investment in the project is estimated at 2 million 365 thousand euros. RUSNANO will invest about 1 million 275 thousand euros in the project in the form of direct investments and loans.

The first stage of the project (2009-2010) provides for the creation of all necessary infrastructure, including specialized licensed warehouses, a customs clearance system, transport logistics (rail, sea, auto and air transportation), a database with on-line ordering mode, a system of electronic accounting and control of reagents. The creation of this infrastructure will ensure the fulfillment of the order within 24 hours in the Moscow region and 48-72 hours in Russia. At this stage, the assortment will amount to 10-15 thousand reagents.

At the second stage (2010-2011), the range of reagents will increase to 20 thousand items, and the project company will start creating its own packaging lines and organizing a quality control system. This will make it possible to use the significant potential of Russian manufacturers of high-purity reagents, whose main customers are currently foreign companies.

The implementation of the third stage (2012-2014) involves bringing the assortment to 25 thousand items and forming the first Russian catalog of high-purity chemical and biochemical reagents.

As the Director of Infrastructure Programs of RUSNANO Tatyana Nikolenko noted, "the market of high-purity chemical and biochemical reagents in Russia last year was estimated at 682 million dollars. The target segments in which the newly created company will operate were selected taking into account the need for high-purity reagents and unique compounds in those areas where there is a potential for innovative development. The implementation of this project will greatly contribute to the creation of new drugs, the development of clinical diagnostic methods and analytical methods of control by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the FSB, doping control centers, etc. It is very important that we create a civilized service for the delivery of high-purity reagents, which is currently practically absent in Russia."

In the USA and Europe, the source of innovative developments in the field of health and life sciences are research laboratories of universities and corporations, whose budget includes standard reagent costs in the amount of 10-15 thousand dollars per year per researcher. Catalog companies compete for orders by providing maximum discounts and organizing the delivery of reagents for most items the day after the order is placed.

Russian manufacturers and scientists are placed in non-competitive conditions, when the delivery of reagents is carried out for 2 or more months at prices many times higher than the catalog. Solving this infrastructure problem will reduce the risks of brain drain in the field of biotechnology, reduce barriers to the creation of innovative developments and will reduce the production costs of companies working in the field of healthcare and biotechnology.
