RUSNANOPRIZE-2013: 5 finalists of the competition

The shortlist of finalists of the RUSNANOPRIZE 2013 prize has been announced

"Nanotechnologies and nanomaterials"Five applications that collected the maximum number of votes during the absentee voting of international experts were submitted for consideration by the Award Committee.

The awarding of the RUSNANOPRIZE 2013 winner will take place as part of a solemn ceremony at the Open Innovations Forum on November 1, 2013.

The RUSNANOPRIZE Award, established in 2009 by the Rosnanotech State Corporation (currently JSC Rusnano) and the Foundation for Infrastructure and Educational Programs, is designed to attract public attention to advanced scientific developments in the field of nanotechnology, introduced into industrial production and proven their practical significance. The RUSNANOPRIZE is awarded annually to inventors, scientists and developers who are the authors of scientific and technological developments in the field of nanotechnology, and companies that have introduced mass production into the development with an annual volume of at least $ 10 million and have achieved maximum commercial success through the introduction of this innovation.

In 2013, the RUSNANOPRIZE International Prize in nanotechnology is awarded in the direction of "Nanomaterials and surface modification". 38 applications were received for the Award, of which 23 were admitted to the competition based on the results of the preliminary selection.

As a result of the absentee voting of the RUSNANOPRIZE Expert Group, a shortlist was formed, which included five nominees.

  1. A group of Russian and American scientists consisting of Professors Ruslan Valiev, Gordon Langdon and Ph.D. Georgy Raab presented the development "Bulk nanostructured metal materials obtained by methods of intensive plastic deformation (IPD)", introduced into the mass production of nanomaterials for medicine and technology in Russia. The amount of investments amounted to about $500 million. The products obtained using IPD methods have strength, resistance to corrosion and fatigue of metal, by tens of percent, and sometimes several times higher than similar indicators of traditional materials.
  2. The complex of research, control, measuring and metrological equipment of nanometer resolution, developed by Doctor of Technical Sciences Viktor Bykov, is based on scanning probe microscopy technology and is used in the production of nanomaterials and their quality control, the development of new semiconductor materials and nanoelectronic devices, other branches of science and engineering.
  3. The technology of using dispersed elementary particles of detonation nanodiamonds, presented by Professors Eiji Osawa, Amanda Barnard and Dean Ho, makes it possible to modify the properties of known materials and is used both in the creation of medical equipment and in mechanical engineering and engineering structures.
  4. The shortlist of the 2013 Prize also included the development of Professor Robert Langer, who last year headed the international RUSNANOPRIZE award committee in the field of medicine, pharmacology and biotechnology. Technologies for the use of nanoparticles in medicine, on the development and industrialization of which prof. Langer, allow to raise to a new level the treatment of cancer and, in particular, malignant brain tumors, which are difficult to respond to traditional methods of therapy.
  5. Nanophase ceramic materials, developed by RUSNANOPRIZE 2013 finalist Professor Richard Saigel and manufactured by Nanophase Technologies Corporation, are used in the automotive and electronics industries, the production of exterior coatings, windows and plastic, as well as in the creation of personal hygiene and animal care products.

"The wide range of applications of the developments nominated for the 2013 RUSNANOPRIZE Award convincingly demonstrates that nanotechnology is already changing many areas of human activity today. It is in this area that there are still unexplored opportunities to solve the global problems of our time – the fight against poverty, hunger, serious diseases, the conservation of energy and the ecology of the planet," Boris Chichkov, Director of the Department of Nanotechnology, Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V., is sure.
