Stem cell treatment legalized

Officially registered in Ukraine for the first time in the CIS
three methods of stem cell treatment

According to Ukrainian media, the Ministry of Health has officially approved the methods of treatment with stem cells of pancreatic necrosis, limb ischemia and injuries and burns. Ukrainian scientists were the first to receive state registration of cellular and tissue technologies in the CIS countries. This was informed by the chief physician of the Institute of Cell Therapy, Doctor of Medical Sciences Yuri Gladkikh at a press conference on Tuesday.

"For the first time in the CIS countries, it is officially allowed to use stem cell preparations. Prior to that, there were no protocols for the use of stem cells. Today we are the first among the CIS countries to receive permission for the treatment of three diseases. That is, it is an official recognition of the events that we have been working on for many years," Gladkikh said.

In turn, the director of the Coordination Center for Organ, Tissue and Cell Transplantation of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences Ruslan Salyutin said that for five years the Institute of Cell Therapy together with the National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after Shupik and the National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology named after Shalimova conducted clinical trials of cord blood stem cell preparations for the treatment of pancreatic necrosis and critical limb ischemia. At the same time, scientists of the Institute of Emergency and Reconstructive Surgery named after Gusak NAMNU has completed five-year clinical trials of treatment methods using stem cells of trophic ulcers of integumentary tissues and burn injuries. The results achieved by Ukrainian scientists make it possible to talk about the high efficiency of new methods, Salyutin noted.

"Ukraine remains among the leaders in the study and, most importantly, in the legitimate use of stem cells in clinical practice. We have every right to declare the prospects for the clinical use of cell-tissue transplants," the scientist stressed.
