Suspended sentence for unconditional falsification

"Cloning pioneer" sentenced to probation<url>
A Seoul court found South Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk, whom the media called a "pioneer of cloning," guilty of embezzlement of budget funds and sentenced him to three years of probation, Yonhap news agency reports (Disgraced scientist Hwang Woo-suk sentenced to suspended jail term).

Hwang's trial lasted three years. The prosecutor demanded a sentence of four years in prison for the defendant. However, the court found the fraud charge, which was also brought against the scientist, unproven.

The investigating authorities opened a case against Hwang Woo Suk in 2006. Shortly before that, the Seoul National University Commission announced that the results of 9 of 11 of his experiments with human stem cells were deliberately manipulated.

The geneticist was stripped of the title of "Outstanding Scientist", which was awarded to him by the South Korean government. All the articles of the scientist published in scientific journals in 2004 and 2005 were also declared invalid.

Hwang Woo-suk himself admitted that the results of his stem cell cloning experiments were falsified. "As the head of a scientific group whose results revealed false data, I take responsibility for myself, admit the mistake and apologize," he said in 2006.

The government of the country then deprived him of a license for stem cell research, and later the prosecutor's office opened a criminal case on charges of fraud and misuse of funds.
