Research and experiments on gene editing should continue with the simultaneous strengthening of measures to prevent the negative consequences of such activities. This was stated on Monday by the Minister of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China Wang Zhigang.

"Modern science still has to take into account negative factors in addition to benefits. For example, artificial intelligence, gene editing can provide us with new tools associated with new, broader opportunities... and at the same time, it is necessary to accurately identify whether they can lead to hidden negative effects," he said, speaking at a press conference. – Gene editing is useful because it allows us to become more aware of ourselves. After all, in fact, we know very little about the causes of diseases and the methods that allow us to fight them."

The Minister added that as technological progress progresses, science has to take into account more and more factors that can lead to side effects.

"Therefore, it is necessary that researchers have an increased sense of responsibility, be imbued with the spirit of science, follow ethical standards and take theory into account when conducting research. Of course, it is necessary that they comply with the law," Wang Zhigang summed up.
