The innovative economy is growing, especially in the field of biomedicine
In total, 612 transactions totaling $ 3.7 billion were concluded in the reporting period, while in the first quarter there were only 603 transactions worth $ 3.2 billion.
In general, the volume of startup financing in the first half of 2009 corresponds to the level of 1996-97. At the same time, the growth of investments suggests that investors have finally stopped "sitting out" and are ready to invest in promising projects. "We are already seeing positive trends in the market: more money has been invested, and the number of financing deals for startups at the earliest stages of their development has increased," says Mark Heesen, president of Venture Capital Association.
Biotech, Internet companies and software developers received the most investments. Those engaged in developments in the field of biotechnology and medicine received $ 1.5 billion in investments (160 transactions), that is, 41% of the total number of venture investments. Software developers are in second place in terms of the amount of funds raised — they were able to attract $ 644 million in 135 transactions. Internet companies received $524 million under 124 contracts. Interestingly, compared to the first quarter of this year, the volume of investments in biotechnology increased by 47%, in software developers remained at the same level, but Internet companies invested 15% less.

If we consider private venture investments in Russia (excluding public investments), then no changes have occurred. In the second quarter of this year, there was a decrease in the volume of venture financing by about two and a half times compared to the same period last year. The same trend was observed in the first quarter. This is due to the fact that due to the global crisis, Russian investors are waiting, we predict that a revival and a change in the trend can be expected no earlier than October.
