The uterus transplant was unsuccessful again

Copper news based on LiveScience: Uterus Transplants Fail Again: Why Are They So Difficult?

It became known that in the United States, three of the four uterine transplant operations that were performed in mid-September at the Baylor University Medical Center (Baylor University Medical Center) failed. The organs that were used for transplantation were taken from living donors. This distinguishes the operations performed from the transplant, which was performed at the Cleveland Clinic in February. In that case, the uterus was taken from a deceased donor. The February operation also ended unsuccessfully – doctors had to remove the transplanted organ due to an infection. Now the reason for the removal of the transplanted organs was that the blood flow in the uterus has not normalized.

In total, 16 such transplants were carried out in the world: half of them ended in failure. Experts explain that such operations are just beginning to be carried out and the technique has not yet been fully developed. Gradually, it will improve – the percentage of successful outcomes will increase, and the duration of the operation will be reduced. Alexander Maskin from the University of Nebraska Medical Center gives an example that about 30 years ago a kidney transplant operation lasted from 6 to 10 hours, and now the transplant takes no more than one and a half.

Doctors from Baylor University have already reported that unsuccessful operations will be analyzed, and the necessary changes will be made to the transplant protocol, which will prevent mistakes and inaccuracies in the future. Scientists also note that uterus transplantation is a much more complex operation than many other organ transplants.

Recall that it is also known about the successful completion of such operations: in Sweden, five women who had uterus transplants were able to get pregnant and give birth. Swedish doctors assisted a team of American doctors.

It is known that one of the patients of the Baylor University Medical Center feels well and there are no signs of organ rejection. If the organ takes root and no complications arise, then IVF procedure will be performed in 6-12 months. In total, doctors plan to carry out 6 more uterine transplants.
