The donor uterus transplant operation was performed for the first time in the USA. The recipient was 26-year-old Lindsey (the woman agreed to disclose only her name), who has three adopted sons.

Lindsay was diagnosed with the uterine factor of infertility – in women suffering from this disorder, the uterus is absent or does not function properly, which makes pregnancy impossible.  The girl found out about it at the age of 16 and did not think that she would ever be able to have children.

On February 26, 2016, the first donor uterus transplant operation in the country was performed at the Cleveland Clinic. The donor was a young woman who died suddenly. The transplantation lasted 9 hours. Lindsay will have to take immunosuppressants that prevent organ rejection – she will be able to make her first attempts to get pregnant only in a year.

Recall that uterus transplantation operations have already been performed. For the first time such transplants were carried out in Sweden in 2014, this led to the birth of four healthy children. American specialists were trained by their Swedish colleagues.

In total, 9 more such operations are planned to be performed at the Cleveland Clinic this year.
