We were protected from cloning!

Russia has decided to extend the moratorium on human cloning for 5 years
RIA NewsRussia has decided to extend the moratorium on human cloning for five years, the head of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation Tatyana Golikova told reporters on Friday.

She recalled that the moratorium on cloning ended on June 23, 2007, and the law itself was adopted in 2002.

"In accordance with the UN declaration on human cloning, we have adopted the same extension for five years, it will come into force from the moment of the official publication of the law, the law applies exclusively to the cloning of human beings," Golikova said.

She added that "this law does not apply to the cloning of any other organisms."

The UN Declaration on Human Cloning calls for the prohibition of all forms of human cloning to the extent that they are incompatible with human dignity and the protection of human life.

Cloning is still the subject of serious discussion in society from the point of view of ethics. The technology of human cloning has not yet been fully developed.

Cloning faces many legal, ethical, and religious challenges.

At the same time, the draft federal law does not prohibit the cloning of other living organisms, as well as the cloning of cells for research purposes. The draft federal law extending the moratorium on human cloning was supported by the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
