Japanese scientists have good news for overweight people: fat around the waist and hips, which usually irritates you and spoils your mood, will help you live longer! People who are overweight at the age of 40 live on average longer than their slimmer fellow citizens.

As a result of a large-scale study, Japanese scientists found that people with extra pounds on average live longer than thin people. The thin ones died about 6-7 years earlier than the full ones. These results may warn against excessive efforts to lose weight. For 12 years, a team of scientists from the University of Tokyo studied the health of 50,000 people aged 40 and over. The researchers grouped people according to body mass index, considered the change in the constitution of the human body throughout their lives and compared life expectancy after 40 years.

The results showed that men with normal weight (body mass index 18.5-25) at the age of 40 lived for about 40 more years, while those whose body mass index indicated overweight (25-30) lived for another 41.64 years. Obese men (BMI above 30) lived an additional 39.41 years. Women with normal weight, as a rule, live 47.97 years after 40, overweight women – 48.05 years, and obese – 46.02 years. Thin men (BMI less than 18.5) on average lived another 34.54 years after the age of 40, and thin women – 41.79 years.

One possible explanation for why thin people live less may be the fact that they smoke more. Also, too thin people are more susceptible to infection with infectious diseases. However, the relationship between the constitution and life expectancy cannot yet be explained. The head of the study, Professor Shinichi Kuriyama from the University of Tokyo, warns that "people will not prolong their lives if they start gaining weight."
