The US National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has launched the second phase of clinical trials of a vaccine against the Zika virus, Reuters reports (with reference to a detailed NIAID press release in which this vaccine was developed, Phase 2 Zika Vaccine Trial Begins in U.S., Central and South America - VM).

The Zika virus vaccine has passed initial safety tests, and the second phase of trials is currently underway, during which the effectiveness of the drug will be revealed. These tests will take place in two stages.

At the first stage, the safety of the vaccine and its ability to stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies to fight the Zika virus will be tested. At the second stage, scientists will assess whether the vaccine is able to prevent infection with the Zika virus.

Almost 2.5 thousand people will participate in clinical trials conducted in the United States, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Peru, Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico.

Preliminary results are expected to be available by the end of 2017. The study will be completed in 2019.
