A group of scientists from Tver State Medical University (TSMU) has created a porous material impregnated with special preparations that can stop bleeding from a wound in the shortest possible time. This sponge prevents the development of pain shock and infection. It can be used on the battlefield, as well as to help victims in various emergency situations. This was reported to TASS by the head of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Disaster Medicine of TSMU Sergey Zhukov.
"The sponge stops external bleeding in the first three minutes from the moment of its application, prevents the development of pain shock for half an hour, thereby preserving the consciousness of the serviceman until the start of the action of a regular syringe tube with an anesthetic, and also protects against the development of infection in the wound for up to 72 hours," Zhukov said.
This effect, according to him, is achieved due to the optimal composition of medicines, which is impregnated with sponge material. "The essence of the invention lies in the fact that when wounded, a sterile hemostatic sponge is applied to the wound, followed by its bandaging, while the sponge is impregnated with a broad–spectrum antibiotic in the maximum daily dosage, as well as antihistamine and analgesic solutions," Zhukov said.
The sponge can be supplied both ready-made and manufactured in the field. Its use does not require special medical knowledge. "Sponge manufacturing can be organized in a combat zone. The deployment of production is required near a medical warehouse or pharmacy," the agency interlocutor added.
The team of scientists has received several patents of the Russian Federation for an invention and a utility model for this development. Specialists transfer the technology to interested organizations for an official clinical trial.
