Remote-controlled contraceptive

The new contraceptive is a 20x20x7 mm implant designed to be implanted under the skin of the buttocks, abdomen or in the armpit. The contraceptive effect of the microchip is provided by the daily release of 30 micrograms of levonorgestrel, a hormonal drug currently used in contraception.

Inside the implant there is a microchip 1.5 cm wide, on the surface of which there are reservoirs containing enough of the drug to provide contraception for 16 years. The tightness of the containers is ensured by a unique titanium and platinum seal developed by MicroCHIPS, which temporarily melts when an electric charge passes through it from the built-in battery, which ensures the daily release of a small dose of hormone.

To conceive a child, a woman can inactivate the implant using a remote control. Pressing the button again activates it. The doctor can also remotely adjust the dosage of the drug.

Next year, the company plans to begin preclinical studies of the safety and effectiveness of the new contraceptive, and its appearance on the market is scheduled for 2018.
