The Center of Cellular Technologies has opened in St. Petersburg

"Dr. Peter"

The Center of Cell Technologies has opened at the Institute of Cytology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Its construction began two years ago with a grant from the Russian Science Foundation. This is one of the first laboratories in Russia that will work in accordance with the requirements of the new law on biomedical cell products and create products according to GMP standards.

The Institute of Cytology of the Russian Academy of Sciences has been working on cellular products for the past thirty years. The most famous of them is the dermal equivalent, intended for the treatment of skin lesions, including chronic incurable diseases, as well as for the treatment of supercritical and critical burns. He has already saved the lives of several burn patients.

– Now our task is to prepare the dermal equivalent for use in clinical practice. Due to the fact that the law on biomedical cell products came into force on January 1, 2017, it can already be used in the treatment of patients. We had permission to use this drug, but now we have to conduct new research in a "clean" laboratory in GMP conditions," Natalia Mikhailova, acting Director of the INC RAS, told Dr. Peter.

According to Natalia Mikhailova, the Institute has already created working banks of dermal fibroblasts with individual bookmarks and in the future they hope that this will be a full–fledged bank of dermal fibroblast cells, which may be required in case of man-made disasters or other emergencies.

The work of the Center for Cellular Technologies will accelerate the development and introduction into practical healthcare of new methods of treatment based on cellular technologies, in accordance with Russian and international norms and requirements, since the laboratory is equipped with the necessary equipment. For example, one of the first automated cell culture systems in Russia, CompacT by Sartorius, is installed here.

This fully automated system allows the cultivation of living cells under fully controlled conditions according to specified protocols 24 hours a day without human intervention. Its capabilities will be used to create stem cell banks according to the GMP standard for advanced research. Including for preclinical studies of pharmaceuticals and medical products on cell cultures in vitro. This practice is becoming a standard all over the world, since it allows reducing the use of laboratory animals for these purposes, making research more accurate, faster and large-scale.

The Russian-Scandinavian Reference Center is also starting work at the Center for Cellular Technologies. According to Natalia Mikhailova, its tasks include the development of cooperation between Russian and European scientists. It will be a platform for the exchange of experience and training of specialists in new techniques.

– We are open to all institutions working in the field of cellular technologies, – said the head of the INC RAS. – We are ready to provide services for conducting preclinical tests on cell cultures, both for manufacturing companies and for scientific institutions.
