RUSNANOTECH 2010: continued

The site is expandingGeorgy Pulyaevsky, "Expert Online"
It all started on November 1 with the opening ceremony of the forum.

The participants of this almost festive event were: First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Ivanov, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of Rusnanotech-2010, CEO of Rusnano Anatoly Chubais, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Nobel Prize laureate, Academician Zhores Alferov and CEO of Microsoft Steve Ballmer

In the program posted on the official website, it can be noted that the first two days were almost entirely devoted to the work of the scientific, technological and business sections of the forum.

On the first day, the topic of the use of nanotechnology in the fuel and energy complex, construction, energy and chemical industries attracted much public attention. It is also worth noting that this year the German-Russian symposium on nanomaterials "New Horizons" was held on the basis of the forum (the meeting opened on November 1). In addition to nanomaterials, on the first day of the forum, the scientific section of the forum studied the following topics: nanodiagnostics, nanobiotechnology, nanophotonics and nanoelectronics, nanotechnology in medicine. The official website of the forum also noted the attention of the public to the report of the 2010 Nobel laureate Dr. Konstantin Novoselov.

Personally, I cannot but rejoice at the expansion of the forum site, thanks to which this year the forum is interesting not only to scientists and entrepreneurs, but also to a wider range of prospective visitors. For the first time in the three-year history of the forum, Rusnano, together with the US National Science Foundation and Science magazine, exhibited photographs of the winners of the International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge (ISEVC). Every year (since 2003) this competition is held in five categories: "Photography", "Illustration", "Informational posters and graphics", "Interactive games" and "Non-interactive media". The purpose of ISEVC is to demonstrate the role that science plays in everyday life. The jury of the contest evaluates the works of the contestants according to three parameters: the level of emotional impact, the originality of the idea and visibility. Next to the best photo works (ISEVC) there are exhibits of the project "Hi-tech as a premonition", organized by the Rusnanotech-2010 Foundation (this project was born on the basis of a workshop that took place from September 30 to October 4 in Moscow, in the Architect's House for contemporary art artists, architects and designers, where they were able to get acquainted with nanostructured materials, their properties, technology and scope of application). Thanks to this expansion of the nanofloor, forum visitors can observe a flower arrangement with a height of only 10 microns, carbon nanotubes tied into a knot with a wire with a complex microarchitecture with a width of 200 microns, DNA spirals, neural networks of the human brain, carbon fiber "diamond", carbon objects "tumbleweed", a city of dreams built using a powder 3D printer and others .

The second day of the Rusnanotech-2010 international forum was fruitful for Rusnano — five important agreements were signed, several key statements were made about the prospects of alternative energy in Russia. The result of the projects should be the appearance of the first industrial solar power plant — this decision was made by the government of the Stavropol Territory and the company "Hevel" (a joint venture of the Renova Group and the state corporation "Rusnano"); the first solar power plant will appear in Kislovodsk, as well as "smart roads" ("Rusnano" signed cooperation agreements with the state company "Russian highways"). The head of the corporation Anatoly Chubais admitted that the state corporation "has been getting close to road construction for a long time." There will also be the introduction of nanotechnology in the gas industry.

An unusual finale of the second day was the presentation of a unique book, the first dictionary of basic nanotechnology terms in Russia. The dictionary includes more than 500 dictionary entries that interpret the most commonly used terms in this industry. The new book was presented by Sergey Kalyuzhny, Editor-in-chief of the dictionary, Director of the Department of Scientific and Technical Expertise of Rusnano State Corporation, and Alexey Khokhlov, Director of the Scientific and Educational Center for Nanotechnology of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Vice-Rector of Moscow State University, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The publication has become unique both for Russia and for the rest of the world. "I am not aware of analogues of such a dictionary abroad. It is planned to translate it into English in the future," Kalyuzhny said.

Today is the last day of the forum, and everyone is looking forward to a colorful finale. The last day of work will be opened by a plenary session, during which Anatoly Chubais, CEO of Rusnano, and Mikhail Kovalchuk, Director of the state institution "Russian Scientific Center Kurchatov Institute", will speak. Then there will be a panel discussion "Incentives and barriers to innovation". It will be moderated by the famous TV presenter Vladimir Pozner. On November 3, there will also be solemn awarding ceremonies for the winners of the Rusnanoprize-2010 International Prize in Nanotechnology, the Russian Youth Award in the Field of Nanoindustry and the International Competition of Scientific works of Young scientists in the field of nanotechnology. And of course one of the most anticipated events is the speech of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
