The first conference on Medicine at Phys Tech

October 9-10 at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology
The I International Conference PhystechMed took place.

Pharmcluster.ruThe event, organized by the Faculty of Biological and Medical Physics of MIPT together with the Center for Living Systems of MIPT, the Biopharmaceutical Cluster "Severny" with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Education and Science, was attended by a total of more than 120 specialists from various fields of medicine, as well as more than 20 foreign delegates.

The conference was opened by a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, Director of the Institute of Emergency Medicine. Sklifosovsky, Mogeli Hubutia.

The speakers and participants of the conference included mathematicians, physicists, doctors, engineers, which confirms in practice the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in the development of medicine. A large percentage of doctors in the audience, in turn, demonstrates the role of Phys Tech in improving Russian medical technologies.

At the I International Conference PhystechMed, reports were presented by both Russian and foreign scientists – employees and collaborators of Phystech: the head of the Laboratory of stem Cell Biology of the University of Leipzig (Germany) – Augustinus Bader, MD, Professor, Deputy Director for Scientific and Educational Work of the FNCC DGOI. Dmitry Rogachev, Head of the Department of Oncology and Radiation Therapy of the M.I. Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University – Sergey Rumyantsev, President of the New European Surgical Academy (NESA) (Germany) – Michael Stark, Professor of the University of Ioannina (Greece) – Ioannis Kosmas, Professor of RUDN, Member of the New European Surgical Academy (NESA), Berlin, Germany Mynbayev and other famous scientists.

Augustinus Bader's report "Biotechnologies: scarless healing" was devoted to the prospects of reconstructive surgery not only for plastic surgeons, but also for neurosurgeons and traumatologists. Augustinus Bader is the chairman of the Scientific Council of the Laboratory of Cellular Technologies of the Center for Living Systems. The importance of scarless injury healing plays a key role in regenerative medicine. Sergey Rumyantsev's report aroused the interest of the audience primarily because it became obvious that the concept of "personalized medicine" is not just a neologism, but a term that has become firmly established in the practice of treating patients with oncological diseases.

The issues of longevity and understanding of the causal relationship between diseases and the aging process caused a lively discussion among the participants of the section of Dr. Alexey Moskalev. The scientific dispute between British and Israeli scientists David Gemsa and Ehud Cohen, respectively, concerned the latest approach to aging in the world. Is aging a disease? It was not possible to reach a consensus this time. The discussion continued on the sidelines and may grow into new collaborations of MIPT with the world's leading scientists. A separate laboratory under the leadership of Alexey Moskavlev has been created to study and find solutions to life extension problems at Phystech.

The reports presented in the biotechnology section on new products for healthcare developed by Russian scientists aroused great interest, including among the representatives of large companies present at the conference. In particular, the joint development of Phystech and Konmet LLC – osteoconductive coating – has shown new opportunities for accelerated rehabilitation in traumatology. The development of the company "Vesttrade" LLC together with the Department of Plastic Surgery and Cellular Technologies of the Russian National Research Medical University named after N. I. Pirogov under the leadership of Natalia Manturova and with the participation of MIPT graduates demonstrated the prospects of 3D modeling for practical medicine. The section "Mathematics in Medicine", conducted jointly with the professors of I.M. Sechenov Moscow State Medical University, included reports on translational medicine and biomodeling. On the second day of the conference, the section received a practical continuation. The participants of the I International Conference PhystechMed observed in real time the cesarean section operation, which was performed by the "living classic" of surgery – Michael Stark.

The master class of Igor Efimov, Distinguished Professor of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, head of the Laboratory of Human Electrophysiology at the MIPT Center for Living Systems, gathered not only professionals, but also attracted the attention of students and graduate students of MIPT. Igor Efimov demonstrated the prospects for the development of biotechnologies in cardiology and showed by practical examples what a huge progress has been made in the treatment of patients through the use of modern high-tech procedures.

The I International Conference PhystechMed was completed by a section of young scientists. The opportunity to speak at the conference was given to students and postgraduates of MIPT, whose research concerns fundamental and applied aspects of the development of biomedicine.

The conference participants noted the decent level of the conference, although it was organized for the first time, and showed interest in further cooperation with Phystech. In particular, Professor Kadaifchi Oktay from ONKIM Cellular Stem Cell Technologies, Istanbul, Turkey, said that the existing capabilities of Phystech in the field of cellular technologies allow joint experimental work in the direction of anti-aging medicine. Professor Michael Stark, in turn, suggested considering the possibilities of interaction with a Physicist on mathematical modeling and genomic diagnostics.

Foreign guests also took the opportunity to visit the laboratories of the MIPT Center for Living Systems, where about 20 laboratories in the field of life science are already functioning.

"We are very pleased that the guests were able to evaluate our efforts to create an "intellectual framework", to increase the scientific potential of the MIPT Center for Living Systems. Very soon we will have to move to a new building, where on the territory of 11,000 sq. a full-fledged R&D center will be located meters away. It is important for us to saturate it with research, projects, and strengthen cooperation with partners around the world. I thank all the participants of the PhystechMed conference for their visits. I hope that the results will not take long to wait. Together we are working to ensure that in 2015 the Severny Biopharmaceutical Cluster can become the headquarters for all high-tech research in the Moscow region," said Alexander Melerzanov, Dean of the Faculty of Biological and Medical Physics, Head of the I International Conference PhystechMed.
