The theme of the exhibition is extremely relevant. Biotechnology is currently one of the main scientific and practical directions of the XXI century, determining the level of world civilization. The role of biotechnology in solving global problems of mankind is steadily increasing: food security, fundamental improvement of medicine, prevention of habitat degradation and global climate change, mitigation of the crisis of non-renewable resources, etc. The products obtained through the use of biotechnology are intended for almost all sectors of the economy, primarily agriculture and fish farming, food, forestry and pulp and paper industry, medicine, pharmaceuticals, etc.

Biotechnology is included in the list of priorities of the Concept of Long-term socio-economic Development of the Russian Federation until 2020. At a meeting of the Government Commission on High Technologies and Innovations held in April this year, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin noted that the XXI century will be the century of biology. When discussing the creation of technology platforms in the country, the Prime Minister said: "Among the first technology platforms that we intend to create, a number are directly related to biotechnology. These are such platforms as "Medicine of the Future", "Bioindustry and Bioresources".

More than 60 companies from Russia and Germany are taking part in the exhibition-conference "Bioindustry 2011".

The exhibition will feature:

  • Biotechnological and bioengineering developments for the development of atmospheric, hydrosphere and lithosphere resources, environmental protection, protection and restoration of flora and fauna.
  • Software and hardware, bioinformatics complexes, laboratory, metrological, diagnostic and industrial equipment.
  • Nutrient media.
  • Bio-raw materials, bio-ingredients for the food and pharmaceutical industry, medicine, hygiene, veterinary medicine, cosmetology, etc.

A significant place in the exposition is occupied by the collective stand of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which presents the biotechnological achievements of scientists from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Moscow Region, Stavropol, Ivanovo, Kola and Komi Scientific Centers.

Innovative solutions in the field of agricultural biotechnology, including the development of environmentally friendly technologies for crop production, animal husbandry and processing industries, the creation of new varieties of various crops, new breeds of animals and birds, methods of production of food acids, dyes and flavors, fats and oils are demonstrated by scientific institutions of the North-Western Regional Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (Saint Petersburg), the Institute of Biological Industry of the Russian Agricultural Academy (Moscow Region), the G. K. Scriabin Institute of Biochemistry and Physiology of Microorganisms of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow Region).

The exposition of the Agricultural Microbiology Research Institute of the Russian Agricultural Academy (St. Petersburg), celebrating its 80th anniversary these days, presents the results in the field of studying molecular genetic processes, genes and bacteria, microorganisms, modern methods of creating organic fertilizers, methods of pest control of agricultural plants.

In the expositions of the Institute of Physiology of the Komi Scientific Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Syktyvkar) and the Northeastern Federal University named after M. K. Ammosov (Yakutsk), special attention is paid to the development of biotechnologies for medical, agricultural, food and environmental purposes for the northern regions.

The following sections will work within the framework of the conference:

  • "Modern bioindustry for food security".
  • "Medicine of the future: what is it like"?
  • "Genome: philosophy and vector of action".
  • "Forest biotechnology: from research to innovation".

There will also be a plenary session on the topic "Biotechnologies and challenges of the time".

Exchange of vacancies of biotechnological specialties

For the first time in Russia, an attempt was made to systematize specialties for various branches of the biondustry and create an All-Russian job bank. The work was carried out by the Committee on Labor and Employment of St. Petersburg with the support of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation with the participation of committees and employment services of a number of other regions of the country.

In connection with the announcement of 2011 as the International Year of the Forest, a special block of events will be devoted to the use of biotechnologies in forestry.

The exhibition-conference "Bioindustry 2011" is open to the public on May 17-18 from 10.00 to 18.00, on May 19 – from 10.00 to 16.00. Admission is free.
