Fruit-beneficial treatment of diabetes

Berry wine has given an idea for a new drug for diabetics

ABC MagazineScientists from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) have discovered a new and even delicious way to lower blood sugar levels for diabetics.

The original idea was prompted by the fermentation products of berries.

Studying biologically active substances contained in the local wine from blackberries and blueberries, American researchers found among them compounds that inhibit enzymes responsible for the absorption and assimilation of carbohydrates. The content of alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase enzymes in the wines was 91.8% and 103.2%, respectively, in comparison with the common hypoglycemic drug acarbose.

However, the beneficial properties of berry drinks did not end there. The list of health–improving effects of wines on the body was replenished due to the high content of antioxidants in them - polyphenols, including anthocyanins. The latter are particularly interested in researchers, since these biologically active substances have a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect and can contribute to the prevention of the development of metabolic disorders and such chronic ailments as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Out of 19 possible variants of blueberry and blackberry mixtures, the researchers managed to find one in which the content of these compounds reached optimal values.

The future plans of scientists include the creation of a non-alcoholic analogue of berry wines, which will be useful not only in the fight against diabetes, but will also be indispensable for the overall improvement of the body.

More information about the results of the study can be found in the Journal of Food Science: Johnson et al.,
