The main scientific theories of aging
The mechanisms of aging are quite complex and diverse. Today there are several alternative theories that partly contradict each other, and partly complement each other.
11.07.2008The mechanisms of aging are quite complex and diverse. Today there are several alternative theories that partly contradict each other, and partly complement each other.
11.07.2008There are several dozen theories of aging. Many of them are already only of historical interest, while the rest, reflecting a number of essential aspects of the process, can be put into a logical scheme of a more universal general mechanism of aging. One thing is common to all hypotheses – the aging of the body begins immediately after the division of the fertilized egg begins.
11.07.2008Anyway, today most American experts agree that everyone should do physical exercises, reduce stress loads and eat less. After all, the results of experiments with calorie restriction and dietary supplements will have to wait for several more decades.
03.07.2008At the VIII International Symposium "Biological Mechanisms of Aging", scientists analyzed the results of research on the mechanisms of aging of various biological systems, discussed new theories in this field and the features of new experimental approaches, as well as social aspects of gerontology.
19.06.2008If the accumulated information is knowledge, and wisdom is the ability to organize this knowledge and use it, then of course old age is associated with wisdom. But over the years, wisdom does not always come: it is inherent only in the aging brain, not pathologically, due to diseases, but naturally.
17.06.2008Anti-oncogene p16 is an effector of physiological aging of cells and aging of the whole organism; protein p19, which is also an anti-oncogene, suppresses these processes. The lack of the BubR1 protein induces an increase in the expression of both of these regulators of aging and, most likely, some other, as yet unknown...
11.06.2008Having children, without a doubt, prolongs life. But, despite the statistically obvious data, the authors are cautious in their conclusions. There may also be an inverse relationship: perhaps people who are initially less healthy are less likely to have children. Which connection is stronger cannot be determined solely on the basis of statistical data.
06.06.2008The inclusion of a glass of wine or a supplement containing resveratrol in the diet after middle age is as effective for preventing the effects of aging as a calorie and fat-restricted diet.
05.06.2008Dermatologists at the University of Michigan explain the mechanisms that ensure the effectiveness of methods to prevent skin aging. They hope that the results obtained will help people navigate the numerous offers of the multibillion-dollar rejuvenation industry.
29.05.2008Reducing the number of calories consumed is a more effective means of protecting against diseases than physical activity. In addition, fasting as such in some cases can increase life expectancy.
14.05.2008Studies by Castren and his colleagues give serotonin reuptake inhibitors a second youth, due to the fact that these substances restore youth to brain cells.
24.04.2008The increased production of Gcn4 in the cells of long-lived yeast strains in combination with its need for an increase in life expectancy associated with fasting makes this protein an important factor in the mechanism of life extension that has been actively studied recently.
22.04.2008SkQ1 does not give immortality, but gives "eternal youth" within the normal or slightly increased lifespan.
21.04.2008On March 25-26, 2008, the first All-Russian seminar "Genetics of life Expectancy and aging" was held at the Institute of Biology of the Komi National Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Syktyvkar).
02.04.2008Hydrogen sulfide, harmful in large quantities, in small doses can not only prolong life, but also save the body's resources and significantly reduce the need for food and oxygen.
26.03.2008Scientists have found strong evidence against the "grandmother hypothesis", which explains why women continue to live after menopause. The "hypothesis of motherhood", which explains both long life and menopause itself, received support.
13.03.2008Homozygous mutants of the second generation lived ten times longer, but turned out to be infertile. Maybe it is possible to somehow compensate for the infertility associated with the age-1 gene and leave only immortality?
04.03.2008Finding a "Macropoulos remedy" that allows you to defeat old age with one pill is a hopeless task, but in recent years, the problems of gerontology have attracted increasing attention from researchers in various fields of life sciences.
04.03.2008The increase in life expectancy and the aging of the population of developed countries have increased interest in gerontology, and above all, in the study of the primary mechanisms of aging of organisms and populations, as well as factors determining life expectancy.
20.02.2008The concept of phenoptosis makes us look at the problem of aging in a different way. What if this is the way nature forces us to leave, making room for the young? What if this slow extinction, as well as the apoptosis program, is embedded in the form of a genetic program in our genome, and its main biological meaning is the acceleration of evolution? These questions allowed us to formulate a theory of programmed aging as an instrument of evolution.
