III Internet Olympiad "Nanotechnology – a breakthrough into the Future"

In continuation of the traditions of the First and Second Internet Olympiads in Nanotechnology, Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), with the support of the Russian Federal Agency for Education, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Russian Council of School Olympiads, the Nanotechnology Society of Russia, is holding the Third All-Russian Internet Olympiad "Nanotechnology - a Breakthrough into the Future". The co-organizer of the Olympiad is the Russian Nanotechnology Corporation (RUSNANO). The Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Olympiad is the Rector of Moscow State University, Academician V.A.Sadovnichy. Educational and methodological support of the Olympiad is provided by the Scientific and Educational Center of Moscow State University for Nanotechnology, as well as representatives of a number of leading universities and the Russian Academy of Sciences, invited to the methodological commission and the jury of the Olympiad. The Supervisory Board of the Olympiad includes the largest representatives of science and business in Russia engaged in the development of nanotechnology.

The purpose of the Olympiad is to find and encourage enthusiasts who want to participate in the development of nanotechnology in the Russian Federation. Everyone can try their hand at it, without age and citizenship restrictions, who has registered since the publication of this announcement and until March 21, 2009 on the Nanometer website in a special form of an Olympiad participant. Participants of the First and Second Internet Olympiads, users of the Nanometer website register for the Olympiad according to a simplified scheme under their username and password. Participation in the Olympiad at all stages is free of charge.

The 2009 Olympiad was included in the list of school Olympiads, which gives applicants significant benefits when entering universities. The mechanism of crediting benefits depends on the Rules of admission to the university to which the applicant will enroll. In particular, at Lomonosov Moscow State University, the winners and prize-winners of the Olympiad will have benefits for admission to the Faculty of Materials Sciences (FNM), Chemical, Physical, Biological Faculties, Faculty of Bioengineering and Bioinformatics, Faculty of Fundamental Medicine and other faculties.

In 2009, the Olympiad will consist of correspondence and full-time rounds. The correspondence round will be held from March 1 to March 21, 2009 on the official website of the Olympiad. Students will solve special tasks in a complex of subjects (chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology) related to the current state and prospects for the development of nanotechnology. Students, postgraduates, and young scientists will be asked to solve problems in the thematic sections "Nanochemistry" (with the participation of the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University and MSU FNM), "Nanophysics" (with the participation of the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University), "Functional nanomaterials" (with the participation of MSU FNM), "Biology and Nanomedicine" (with the participation of physical, biological Chemical Faculties, MSU, Moscow Medical Academy), "Structural Nanomaterials" (with the participation of Belgorod State Technological University, Voronezh State University, MISIS), "Alternative Energy and Ecology" (with the participation of ONEXIM Group, MSU, RCTU), "Nanoengineering" (section of the Moscow State Technical University named after N.E..Bauman),"Nanotechnology in Industry" (RCTU section). As part of the Olympiad, a special creative competition will also be held, the winners of which will receive prizes in separate nominations and will be invited to the international conference "Lomonosov" (Moscow State University, section "Fundamental Materials Science and Nanomaterials") and "Step into the Future!" (Bauman Moscow State Technical University). The winners and prize-winners of the correspondence round will be invited to the intramural round, which will take place from May 4 to May 6, 2009 at Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The full–time tour for schoolchildren will include a computer quiz and solving theoretical problems, as well as a tour of the faculties of Moscow State University and specialized departments of other universities. Students, postgraduates and young scientists will be offered a computer test and practical tasks on modern analytical equipment of the MSU center for collective use, and a meeting with representatives of RUSNANO will also be organized. Photos and interviews of the winners and prize-winners will be included in a special book of honor (chronicle of the Internet Olympic Games). The face-to-face tour will end with the solemn awarding of the winners of the Olympiad in the building of the Fundamental Library of Moscow State University on Vorobyovy Gory. The Organizing Committee covers transportation costs, accommodation and meals for the participants of the full-time tour and awards significant cash prizes to the winners and prize-winners.

It is planned that thanks to the participation of RUSNANO, the prize fund of the Olympiad will be significantly increased this year compared to 2007 and 2008. The Corporation will also offer for the first time unique opportunities to support applicants who have entered the University following the results of the Olympiad and have chosen nanosystems, nanomaterials, and nanotechnology as the direction of their scientific and practical activities, which will be announced later.

We invite everyone – especially schoolchildren, students, postgraduates, young scientists – to register for the Olympiad, participate and win in it! Success to all and best wishes!

Information about the sponsors of the Olympiad, the mechanism of crediting benefits for admission to universities and other information will be reported in the following press releases and information messages on the Olympiad page of the Nanometer website.
