In all seriousness, scientific and medical news about another study by Canadian (in fact, truly British) scientists flew through the media:
Josh Lee, a 20-year-old student at the University of Alberta, conducted a scientific experiment on his own jeans. In September 2009, he bought a brand new pair of jeans and subjected them to severe tests: for 15 months he wore them practically without taking them off, did not wash them, slept in them for a month, and to eliminate unpleasant odors, he put them in the refrigerator for a while every week. "I wanted to expose them to the maximum possible impact," Josh Lee explained in an interview with the Edmonton Journal.
Lee and his supervisor, associate Professor of Ecology and Hygiene Rachel McQueen, needed a months-long denim epic in order to study the bacterial environment that forms in jeans after long wear. They took several samples and the result of the analysis was quite unexpected: the bacterial environment was within the normal range. Pathogenic bacteria were not found in the samples. At the second stage of the experiment, Lee washed his jeans and wore them for another 13 days, after which the samples were taken a second time and the result was practically no different from the first tests.
"I am pleasantly surprised," Associate Professor Rachel McQueen assessed the outcome of the experiment, "We found a normal microflora characteristic of the skin. The results obtained during the first and second stages were very similar in composition." In practice, she added, this means that long-term wearing of jeans is safe for a healthy individual.
Meanwhile, the experimental student does not intend to stop there: he has received a new pair of jeans from a Canadian design firm and will constantly wear them for one and a half to two years.
