In Britain for the first time it was possible to clone a dinosaur"Abakan Today"

A group of scientists from Liverpool John Moore University realized a long–standing dream of paleontologists - they managed to successfully clone an apatosaurus.

Scientists extracted the preserved DNA from the fossil, which was on display at the Museum of the University of Natural Sciences, and injected it into an ostrich egg. "Ostriches have a lot of genetic traits in common with dinosaurs," explained Dr. Gerrard Jones, professor of biology at the university and lead scientist of the project. "The microstructure of the ostrich shell and the shell of the apatosaurus egg are almost identical. That's why cloning succeeded."

The born baby apatosaurus was named Spot, according to News-Hound (British Scientists Clone Dinosaur).

He is currently under observation at the University College of Veterinary Medicine.

"I used to think that this could only happen in the movies!" says project participant, chemist Dr. Gemma Sheridan. "But we managed to do it right here in our laboratory. It's amazing."

The fact of cloning has already attracted the attention of a wide variety of activists from animal rights defenders to religious figures. They claim that cloning animals is unethical and immoral. PETA President Craig Farmer criticized scientists for potentially dangerous experiments to create a new species. "Scientists have reproduced a Jurassic animal just to watch it suffer!" he said.

However, scientists are optimistic. According to Dr. Sheridan, the animal is in a stable condition.

A banana was cloned in the bioengineering laboratory of AltSUAltai State University

Scientists of the bioengineering laboratory of Altai State University continue successful experiments with cloning.

Last year they managed to obtain unique results of microclonal reproduction of sea buckthorn, and a few days ago the first harvest of bananas was harvested in the greenhouse of the South Siberian Botanical Garden.

Thanks to the efforts of scientists, the genetically modified banana, obtained at the beginning of the year by the microclonal method, is more resistant to the Siberian climate compared to its tropical relative, has a shorter ripening period.

The new species was named Musa altaica (Altai banana). Fruits are 10 cm long, weight — up to 100 g. The yield is 5 kg per plant.

The fruit of the Altai banana tastes sour, but scientists promise that in a few years it will be possible to get real dessert varieties.

Altai bananas are ready to decorate the April Fools' table of Barnaul residents.

Lukashenko demands breakthrough achievements from science, as in JapanTelegraf.by

On March 31, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko (either in advance, or he mixed up the numbers – VM) at a meeting with leading scientists on the prospects for the development of science demanded world-class breakthrough developments from them.

According to him, Belarus is in conditions similar to those in which Japan, South Korea, Singapore developed, but so far the country "has no noticeable achievements in any of the high-tech areas."

The Head of State stressed the importance of breakthrough directions, lighthouses, "which we should focus on going forward," BelTA reports.

The President urged to work out promising areas of activity so that the money allocated by the state for science is spent on what the state needs.

In his opinion, the achievements of Belarusian science (supercomputer, satellite, cancer drugs, transgenic goats, cell technology center) are important only on the scale of Belarus, but are far from the world level. "What the Academy of Sciences and other scientific organizations of the country are doing now is useful, but small, there are no revolutionary discoveries and developments," he said.

"If you are afraid to say what needs to be done, don't be afraid, speak directly. I am ready for any, even revolutionary solutions. Today we need not only development, we need a breakthrough, at least in several directions," Alexander Lukashenko stressed.

Despite the declared readiness for revolutionary changes, the Head of state also called for the maximum use of previous experience in improving the science management system. "Everything should be done based on the experience of previous generations, and use to the maximum what has been done before us, take the best and improve what we need. Now is not the time for withdrawal," he said.
