Profit from immunotherapy – in 10 years

Cellular immunotherapy is not ready to show big sales yet

Elena Kalinovskaya, Pharmaceutical Bulletin

Despite the fact that cellular immunotherapy opens up new treatment possibilities in the future, it is not capable of making any significant breakthrough in the next few years. Sales of drugs based on cellular technologies will be low until 2024, especially compared to immune checkpoint inhibitors that "hack" the tumor's defense against the immune system, according to analysts at the London-based analytical company GlobalData.

While cellular immunotherapy, including cancer treatment using dendritic cells and chimeric T-cell antigen receptor (CAR-T), is expected to show promising results in combination therapy over the next few years, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the market of immuno-oncological drugs in the short term, the report says GlobalData.

At the same time, according to Dan Roberts, senior analyst at GlobalData, despite this, immune checkpoint inhibitors will dominate immuno-oncological therapy, which, according to GlobalData forecasts, can reach sales of $24 billion by 2024, cellular immunotherapy and cancer vaccines will continue to be introduced, despite past failures.

As the analyst notes, it takes time for the active use of cellular immunotherapy. The first studies showed impressive results, but we need to see how long the effect will last, whether it will be a prolonged recovery. Plus, when using these drugs, there are severe side effects, in particular, cytokine release syndrome may occur.

"The high cost of administering these drugs will also put pressure on sales, as well as the fact that they are currently used in one area of oncology – in blood cancer," says Dan Roberts (in a press release Cellular Immunotherapies Represent Long–Term Opportunity in Immuno-oncology Space, says GlobalData – VM).

Nevertheless, he notes that today this is the most promising direction in immuno-oncology, which has a great future in the future.
