Coffee lovers are less likely to have serious liver problems

Ekaterina Shutova, XX2 century

A team of scientists from the UK conducted a study and found that people who drink coffee are 49% less likely to die from chronic liver failure. The text of the work can be found in the journal BMC Public Health (Kennedy et al., All coffee types reduce the risk of adverse clinical outcomes in chronic liver disease: a UK Biobank study).

In the course of the study, the authors examined the data of 494,585 people registered in the British repository of medical and genetic information UK Biobank. The men and women whose data was used in the work were between 40 and 69 years old at the time of registration with UK Biobank. 384,818 of them declared their love for coffee (on average they drank two cups a day), while the remaining 109,767 did not consume this popular drink.

During 10.7 years, 3,600 cases of chronic liver failure were recorded among volunteers, 5,439 cases of chronic liver failure together with stenosis, 184 cases of liver cancer and 301 cases of death due to chronic liver failure.

As a result of the study, scientists found that coffee lovers have a 21% lower risk of suffering from chronic liver failure, and they also have a lower chance of dying from this disease – and by as much as 49%. At the same time, it is not particularly important which coffee you prefer – ground, instant or decaffeinated (however, the authors noticed that most often ground coffee "saved" volunteers from liver diseases, and it was "most effective" to drink 3-4 cups a day). By the way, an interesting detail: most often instant coffee was preferred by women, elderly people, as well as non-smoking respondents. But ground coffee was more often drunk by volunteers who consumed the most alcohol.

The authors of the study clarify that, despite the data obtained on the correlation between the love of a fragrant invigorating drink and liver health, when it comes to the latter, you should not rely solely on coffee. According to scientists, it is very important to give up bad habits, eat right and lead an active lifestyle.
