The Russian Academy of Sciences announced the admission of students for a master's degree in computer science in the 2011-2012 academic year. The study will go in three directions: theoretical computer science, software development and algorithmic bioinformatics. The appearance of the latter specialization became possible due to the opening of the laboratory of the famous bioinformatician, winner of the megagrant competition Pavel Pevsner at the university.

St. Petersburg Academic University (SPbAU RAS) is the first higher educational institution included in the system of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Initially, it was established as an Academic University of Physics and Technology (AFTU) with a master's and postgraduate degree in physical specialties, but for the fourth year the Department of Mathematical and Information Technologies offers applicants the opportunity to enroll in a master's degree in computer science.

The direction "theoretical computer science" is supported mainly by the staff of the St. Petersburg Department of the Steklov Mathematical Institute (PMI RAS). They conduct scientific work with students, read modern courses on algorithms, discrete mathematics, computational complexity theory, cryptography and other subjects included in the concept of "theoretical computer science". The direction is headed by Eduard Girsh, a leading researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In turn, the direction of "software development" is supported by employees of leading IT companies (Yandex, JetBrains, etc.). In this specialization, emphasis is placed on individual practical classes with students. Work on student projects takes place under the guidance of highly qualified programmers who actually work in the industry.

The direction "algorithmic bioinformatics" was created on the basis of a new laboratory created by Pavel Pevsner, professor of the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California (San Diego, USA), director of the American Center for Computational Mass Spectrometry at the National Institute of Health. He won a mega-grant jointly with St. Petersburg Academic University. In his interview on "Polit. In particular, he noted that "The Academic University in St. Petersburg is a unique place where Academician Alferov has assembled a very strong team in a very short time. The university is completely new and open to new interdisciplinary directions – just what I need." Training in this specialization is carried out mainly by employees of the laboratory of algorithmic biology created by him. It includes in-depth courses on algorithmic issues of genomic and proteomic data analysis, programming, as well as lectures on molecular biology, statistics, machine learning and other more specialized subjects.

SPbAU RAS is located in a complex of newly built buildings of the scientific and educational center, has modern classrooms and equipment. For active recreation, students have a sports complex at their disposal, including a swimming pool, a hall for game sports, an indoor tennis court and a gym. The university has a dormitory, and students come to study from Moscow, Minsk, Novosibirsk, Lipetsk and other cities of Russia and neighboring countries. The training is free for those who have a bachelor's degree and have not previously completed a master's degree.

Preliminary interviews for Master's degree will begin in April 2011. Applicants are invited to fill out a form for admission to the Master's degree on the website of the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Information Technology.

Details are available on the SPbAU website.
