By the end of 2015, the number of HIV-infected residents of Russia may exceed 1 million people. This is stated in the report of the Federal Scientific and Methodological Center for the Prevention and Control of AIDS, distributed to journalists at a press conference, writes TASS.

"For the entire period of observation of the HIV epidemic/AIDS in Russia (from 1987 to November 1, 2014), 864.4 thousand people were reported to the Federal Center for the Prevention and Control of AIDS. HIV-infected citizens of Russia and about 22.4 thousand. HIV-infected foreigners, which suggests that HIV infection has taken root among the Russian population," the report says.

According to the head of the Federal Scientific and Methodological Center for the Prevention and Control of AIDS, Academician Vadim Pokrovsky, who presented the report, by the end of this year the number of cases of HIV infection will reach 900 thousand.

The report notes that especially many new HIV-infected Russians have appeared in the last four years: in 2011 – 60 thousand, in 2012 - 70 thousand, in 2013 – 80 thousand, in 2014 more than 80 thousand plus up to 30 thousand living in Crimea are expected. "If such rates of HIV infection growth continue, we can expect that by the end of 2015 the number of registered cases of HIV infection will reach 1 million," the report summarizes.

At the same time, mortality among HIV-positive patients is increasing. In 2011, 18 thousand people died, in 2012 - 20 thousand, in 2013 – 22 thousand, in total about 170 thousand died. HIV-infected Russians. "At the same time, young people under 35 die, which causes great damage to demography," Academician Pokrovsky noted.

According to the center, about 0.5% of the Russian population are officially registered as living with HIV. "It should be borne in mind that due to the fact that HIV infection has been asymptomatic for an average of 10 years, the true number of Russians living with HIV is much larger - about 1.3 million people, that is, about 1% of the Russian population," the report notes.
