Finnish customs will not use the so-called "coronasobak" trained to recognize infected with coronavirus by smell, reports Yle.fi . This decision is due to insufficient knowledge of this phenomenon.

"The Ministry of Social Welfare and Health believes that there is insufficient scientific evidence that dogs can recognize coronavirus. Therefore, the new law on infectious diseases did not include the possibility of using dogs to detect COVID-19 cases," the publication says.

Finland was the first country to use dogs to identify those infected with the new coronavirus. A pilot project using dogs detecting coronavirus by smell began at the end of last year at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. The agreement on the use of "coronasobak" at the airport will remain in force until June.

Experiments using the ability of dogs to detect coronavirus are also taking place in other countries. In May 2020, a project was launched in the UK to train dogs to diagnose coronavirus infection by smell. A study conducted by Medical Detection Dogs has shown that a dog can check up to 250 people per hour and can be trained to detect odors at a concentration equivalent to diluting one teaspoon of sugar in two Olympic swimming pools.

Specialists of the Aeroflot Cynological Center in Russia 15 dogs of the Shalaika breed are trained. Also, dogs are used to detect coronavirus at Dubai airport. In January, the work of service dogs trained to identify people infected with coronavirus by smell was also demonstrated at Rome's Fiumicino airport. In people infected with coronavirus, the chemical composition of sweat changes. Dogs distinguish an infected person from a healthy one by smell. It takes 6-8 weeks to train these skills, the company's representatives claimed Italpol.

The use of the subtle scent of dogs in medical diagnostics has a long history. Dogs have been successfully trained to detect the smell of certain types of cancer, malaria and Parkinson's disease, as well as to detect low and high blood sugar levels.
