Don't give up eggs

One egg a day will reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease

"First-hand science"

Cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease and stroke, are one of the main causes of death. Scientists and doctors are actively studying the mechanisms of their development and methods of treatment and prevention. Among the latter is following certain diets. A recent study answered questions about the benefits and harms of eating eggs for the cardiovascular system

It is known that low–density lipoprotein molecules - the main carriers of cholesterol inside the cells of organs and tissues, are considered to be associated with the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. They can accumulate in the walls of arteries and participate in the formation of atherosclerotic plaques that block blood flow through the vessels. On the contrary, high-density lipoproteins ensure the elimination of cholesterol from the body and thereby protect against atherosclerosis.

As for cholesterol itself, contrary to popular belief, most of it is synthesized directly in the human body. Cholesterol is an important compound necessary for the production of bile acids, steroid hormones, lipoprotein complexes, as well as a component of cell membranes. But still, we get about a third of our cholesterol from food, and the debate about the need to limit products containing it does not subside.

Studies on the possibility of a link between cardiovascular diseases and eating eggs containing a lot of cholesterol have yielded contradictory results. Meanwhile, in addition to cholesterol, eggs contain a wide range of nutrients and useful biologically active compounds. And to abandon them without solid evidence of their harm is a dubious idea.

Recently, Chinese scientists have investigated how the consumption of eggs affects the level of biomarkers of diseases of the cardiovascular system in human blood, reflecting the state of lipid metabolism. To do this, they studied the blood counts of almost 5 thousand people who took part in the study China Kadoorie Biobank, of which 3401 suffered from cardiovascular diseases, and 1377 were healthy in this regard.

Using the nuclear magnetic resonance method, they measured 225 metabolites in blood samples and identified 24 that were associated with the level of egg consumption reported by the participants.

The analysis showed that people who ate an average of one egg a day had higher blood levels of "good" high-density lipoprotein molecules, as well as the protein apolipoprotein A1, which is part of them.

Conversely, participants who ate fewer eggs had lower levels of beneficial metabolites, including high–density lipoproteins, and higher levels of harmful ones, including low- and very-density lipoproteins.

Thus, if these results are confirmed in further studies, for example, not only in the Chinese population, eating a moderate amount of eggs can protect against heart disease by improving lipid metabolism. And don't limit yourself too much in eggs – especially if you love them.
