It's better to be healthy and rich…

How do chronic diseases affect life expectancy?

Weekly Pharmacy www.apteka.ua (based on the materials of the JAMA Network: Life Expectancy Substantially Lower With Combination of Diabetes, Stroke, or Heart Attack – VM).

According to the results of a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration, Association of Cardiometabolic Multimorbidity With Mortality – VM), the presence of certain diseases, including diabetes mellitus, stroke and heart attack, can increase the risk of premature death. According to scientists, this probability increases significantly if there is more than 1 chronic disease.

According to the lead author of the study, Emanuele Di Angelantonio, a researcher at the University of Cambridge, Great Britain, many chronic diseases have risk factors that directly affect life expectancy, for example, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and glucose levels in the blood, obesity, etc.

The authors of the study claim that almost 10 million men and women living in Europe and the United States have one or a complex of such diseases: diabetes mellitus, heart attack and stroke.

The researchers analyzed data from almost 1.2 million men and women from different countries. During the study, scientists found that patients with one of these pathologies have a 2-fold higher risk of early death compared to those without such diseases. At the same time, in patients with two diseases, the risk is 4 times higher, with three – 8 times.

The team of scientists also noted that the presence of 2 pathologies in the study participants over the age of 60 years is associated with a decrease in life expectancy by 12 years, the presence of 3 – by 15 years. For comparison, according to the study, smokers and people living with HIV often have a shorter life expectancy of 10-11 years compared to those who do not have bad habits and such pathology. Scientists claim that the indicator increases significantly if diseases occur in patients under the age of 40.

The researchers plan to contact healthcare professionals in order to develop recommendations for preventing the development of cardiovascular pathologies in people with diabetes mellitus, and, conversely, diabetes mellitus, in patients with cardiovascular diseases.

At the same time, according to Gregg Fonarow, professor in the field of cardiology at the University of California, USA, the presence of several diseases at the same time significantly complicates the study of the causes of premature death.

According to scientists, maintaining one's health and avoiding the development of chronic diseases should be the main goal of everyone throughout life. Recall that for this purpose, experts recommend being physically active, quitting smoking, following a healthy diet, monitoring body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose. According to G. Fonarou, adhering to such rules, it is possible to reduce the risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, etc.
