Smartphones: safety precautions

Scientists have found out why smartphone owners have a herniated spine

American scientists have found that smartphone owners begin to suffer from pain in the upper back and neck earlier than people who do not use gadgets, Reuters reports with reference to the results of a study published in The Spine Journal (Cuéllar, Lanman, “Text neck”: an epidemic of the modern era of cell phones?).

In fact, this phenomenon was discovered a long time ago: for example, the drawing on the right has been walking on the Internet since the beginning of the century. But it's not a sin to sing a good song again :) – VM.

Orthopedic surgeons Todd Lanman and Jason Cuellar has recorded an increase in the number of young patients suffering from severe back pain or herniated discs in the spine. Analyzing the X-rays, the researchers found that these patients had an atypical neck bend, which led to daily use of a smartphone for several hours.

According to scientists, those who spend a lot of time with smartphones in their hands tilt their heads, and this significantly increases the pressure on the spine. So, for example, when a person stands straight, his head weighs 4.5-5.5 kilograms, but when tilted by 60 degrees, the pressure on the spine is as if the head already weighs 27 kilograms.

As a preventive measure, Lanman and his colleague suggest that smartphone owners reduce the load on the neck, for example, when typing, the phone should be held in front of the face, approximately at eye level. They also recommend typing with the fingers of both hands so that the spine is in a more symmetrical and comfortable position.
