HIV carriers will be able to become donors

Organs of an HIV-infected donor have been transplanted in the USA

IA REGNUM

Surgeons from Johns Hopkins University transplanted the liver and kidneys of an HIV-infected donor to two people also infected with HIV, the Los Angeles Times reports (In a first, liver and kidney from HIV-infected donor are transplanted into HIV-positive patients – VM).

The donor, with the consent of the family, was a deceased 25-year-old girl. Her kidney was transplanted to an HIV-infected man who has been living with this diagnosis for 30 years. The girl's liver was transplanted to another man, except for HIV infection suffering from hepatitis. Doctors report that the operations were successful.

This operation marks the end of a 25-year ban on organ transplantation from HIV-infected people.

The ban will be lifted not only from posthumous donation, but also from those people who are willing to donate their organs to save someone's life. Specialists plan to develop special methods for monitoring and caring for HIV-infected donors during their lifetime.

About 31 thousand organ transplantation operations are performed annually in the USA. It is assumed that lifting the ban on donation of HIV-infected people will give at least five hundred potential donors annually.
