Tablets from a 3D printer
The world's first medicine created using 3D printing has gone on sale
According to Forbes (FDA Approved 3D Printed Drug Available In The US), this is the world's first drug created using 3D printing. The drug was approved for use by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2015.
The drug is designed to combat epilepsy attacks in both children and adults. The developers of Spritam were the pharmaceutical company Aprecia Pharmaceuticals. The drug is a tablet created using ZipDose technology. This technology makes it possible to obtain porous tablets that are easily soluble in the liquid environment of the oral cavity.
This property of the drug makes it convenient for patients with epilepsy, many of whom have difficulty swallowing pills. Representatives of Aprecia Pharmaceuticals believe that such technology can be used in the production of other medicines, in particular intended for patients with Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia and other disorders.
ZipDose technology was developed by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
