A contactless method for detecting COVID-19 has been developed

Anton Deryabin, Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Employees from Peking University have designed a portable electric detector capable of quickly detecting RNA with COVID-19 signs. This is reported by eurekalert.org . (How fast could SARS-CoV-2 be detected?).

Article by Ke et al. An accurate, high-speed, portable bifunctional electrical detector for COVID-19 is published in the journal SCIENCE CHINA Materials – VM.

When using the detector, it is not necessary to take smears from the nose of patients and do a PCR test. The new device is based on the use of graphene field-effect transistors to detect RNA in patients with COVID-19. It consists of a biosensor chip and an electric measuring machine.

The method has been confirmed in clinical trials, the results of which coincide with the results obtained by PCR. The process takes about ten minutes. The new detector will allow mass testing for COVID-19 cheaply and accurately.

The use of the device will also help to reduce the risk of false negative results, which are inevitable during the testing of nucleic acids by the "old" method. The detection system can detect IgM and IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 with an ultra-low level of detail.
