The new blood glucose meter will do without taking blood from a finger

In the near future, the release of a new blood glucose meter will begin in the USA, when using which you do not need to take blood from your finger. The FreeStyle Libre device, created by Abbott, uses a sensor that is attached under the skin with a thin wire, and reports blood glucose levels using a special mini-monitor. This is reported in the official press release of the FDA of the U.S. Department of Health.

To measure blood sugar levels outside of laboratory conditions, a glucose meter is usually used – a device that takes blood from a finger using a special needle and reports glucose levels using a special test strip. This method of monitoring sugar levels is quite simple, and glucose meters for self-monitoring can be purchased at a pharmacy. However, people with diabetes need to constantly monitor their blood sugar levels, so they have to take measurements several times a day, which is quite inconvenient. 

The new device, approved by the U.S. Department of Health's Food and Drug Administration, is designed to help such patients. FreeStyle Libre is a new type of glucose meter developed by the American chemical and pharmaceutical corporation Abbott. The device consists of two parts: a small device that is attached to the patient's body and equipped with a thin wire inserted under the skin, and a mini-monitor that scans the device on the skin and informs the user about the level of glucose in his blood. 

The blood glucose meter starts working 12 hours after installation and can be used for up to ten days without replacement. The device also withstands the effects of moisture.

Clinical trials in humans have shown that the new device can measure blood glucose levels as well as it is done in clinics using a laboratory examination. It has not yet been announced when the new device will go on sale.

It is worth noting that this is not the first contact glucose meter created by Abbott. The company also has a FreeStyle Libre Pro system, which has a similar design, calibrates faster and lasts longer (up to two weeks). However, according to Reuters, such a model requires the help of medical personnel to install and monitor the correct operation. The new model, officially approved by the FDA on September 27, is designed for completely self-monitoring. 

Recently, American researchers have created special ink for tattoos that react to the content of various substances (including glucose) in the human body.
