Researchers from the University of Manchester (University of Manchester, UK) received a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in the amount of 100 thousand dollars for the development of condoms using this material, reports The Independent (Graphene: The wonder material being used to create thinner, stronger condoms and help fight spread of Aids). A group of scientists led by Aravind Vijayaraghavan will add graphene to a latex-like polymer material. The additive should make condoms stronger and thinner.

Graphene was first obtained at the University of Manchester by Russian-born scientists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov in 2004. (In 2010, their work was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics - VM.) Since then, the team has received 7,500 international patents for technologies for its application. According to Vijayaraghavan, graphene can already be used in the manufacture of mobile phone screens, food packaging and chemical sensors. "If this project is successful, graphene will be able to touch our daily life in the most literal sense," the scientist said.
